USE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES AND ITS EFFECTS TO SUSTAINABLE
TOURISM – TURKEY EXAMPLE

ABS TRACT
According to the researches, importance of protecting the nature has increased and sectors have started to carrying out
environment-friendly policies after the 80s. At the 2009 declaration of Organization for Economic Cooperation and
Development, attention was drawn to the energy efficiency and environment-friendly policies. At the final declaration of
2012 Rio +20 Conference, it was stressed that the increase at the use of renewable energy sources is important for sustainable
development. On the other hand, tourism sector has been far from eco-friendly energy policies. At the reports of international
organizations, it has been indicated that there is tension originating from energy usage between natural resource protection
practices and tourism sector as the sector is among the first ranks in using energy and natural resources.

Accommodation services are among the important elements of tourism activities and there are factors such as heating,
cooling, cooking, cleaning which directly affect energy resources. Researches show that 90% of a tourist’s energy
consumption is met by the destination resources. As the tourism activities in Turkey are seen most largely (71,49 % in 2013)
at particular cities (6 cities), the importance and necessity of increasing the use of renewable energy resources become
evident.

Considering these facts, the proclamation method is determined as “Evaluation Phase” which is identified as “evaluation
research of strategy and politics, program and operations of institutions within any field with the intention of determining a
condition/circumstance which is one of the quantitative research types. Accordingly, the effects of “Renewable Energy
Sources” investments towards the sustainability of Turkish Tourism to provide “Resource Productivity ”, which is one of the
objectives of sustainable tourism, shall be revealed.

Within this direction, according to study results; 879 licensed “Renewable Energy Investments” are realized in Turkey
between 2003-2015 on biogas, biogas (landfill gas), landfill gas, hydroelectric power plant (HPP), geothermal and wind
power plant (WPP); and 154 (17,51%) of these investments were actualized in 6 touristic and densely populated cities and the
remaining 725 (82,49%) investments were conducted in other cities. According to this, more renewable energy investments
are needed to be constructed in these six densely populated and touristic cities.

Key Words: tourism, sustainable tourism, energy, renewable energy, resource efficiency
