IMPACTS OF HES PROJECTS ON SUSTAINABLE TOURISM: AN EXAMPLE OF
ÇAMLIHEMġĠN
ABSTRACT
Hydroelectric Plants cause negative environmental effects in both regional and global scale. These effects result in
disappearing of endemic, other species and habitats. Disappearing of habitats and some endemic other species means
destruction of supply values (their attractiveness) which is the base of sustainable tourism perspective. There is a
big agreement on possible negative effects of The Hydroelectric Plant planned to be built on Fırtına Valley which has been
famous for natural tourism activities recently. In this sense, the aim of this study is to investigate environmental effects of
Hydroelectric Plants on valley and suchlike topographies and examine its possible effects on sustainable tourism
in ÇamlıhemĢin. Literature review, observation and interview patterns have been used in the study. National and international
literature of sustainable tourism have been reviewed to be able to reach the aims of the study and the effects
of Hydroelectric Plants on sustainability of tourism has been put forward. On the other side, a semi
structured questionnaire form prepared by secondary data has been conducted with inhabitants of ÇamlıhemĢin through face
to face interview technique. Findings have been evaluated through content analysis, frequency and percentages. On one side,
the literature review has showed that Hydroelectric Plants have had negative effects on sustainable tourism. On the other
side, the findings shows that the construction of Hydroelectric Plant will both destroy natural habitats of local people and
affect sustainable activities of tourism negatively.
