THE SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF A DEVELOPING SPORTS AND WINTER
TOURISM CENTER: THE CASE OF KANDĠLLĠ (ERZURUM)

ABSTRACT
In Turkey, natural environment features and diverse natural tourism resources increase the share of tourism in the economic
activities every passing day. Winter tourism, which is a nature tourism activity, is developing depending on mountainous
areas and climate conditions. One of the regions suitable for the development of this natural tourism activity is the Eastern
Anatolia Region of Turkey (and Erzurum Province in it). Kandilli Ski Center is at a distance of approximately 42 km from
the city center. It is situated at northern latitude 39°54'20" and eastern longitude 40°50'30''. The average heights of ski tracks
vary between 1,720 and 1,765 m. It has 2.5 km, 3.75 km, and 5 km green, blue, and red races. This study bring in Kandilli
sport and winter tourism centers literature, identification, determination of its potential for winter tourism, current usage,
facility characteristics, the suitability for tourism and has tried to determine its sustainable usage. The travel-observation and
interview methods for drawing shapes on the work carried out and was utilized on the basis of GIS (Geographic Information
Systems) techniques. The findings of the impact on tourism, winter tourism field formed with respect to this direction in
terms of strengths and weaknesses. The potential opportunities and that threats were evaluated by SWOT analysis. The
presence of the only biathlon track of our country, spanning a wide range of modern facilities and the opportunity of hotels
with four season sporting activities has increased the importance of this center. Kandilli Ski Center, which is one of the
investments made to contribute to Turkey’s winter tourism, may make important contributions to regional economy and local
economy through sustainable planning and management.
