ABSTRACT
“Social tourism”, according to the most widely accepted definition, can be defined as concepts and events with well-defined
social methods in order to contribute the participation of the low income population in tourism. From that information it can
be deduced that income is the limiting parameter. It can be said that the aim of the social tourism is to make low income
obtaining people participate in tourism and therefore to reduce the physical and cognitive damages.
In Turkey, there seem to be limited social tourism approaches. One of them is the vocation credit which was established by
Tourism Bank Inc. during 1975-1984. Due to some obstacles this approach was terminated. On the other hand public service
camps can be defined as a social tourism approach however only the government employed in particular public service can
be served in those facilities.
Aim of this study is to emphasize the social tourism which was not properly considered in our country and also provide
advices. In this study, semi-structured interview method was used as qualitative research method 50 people were interviewed
in Sakarya who works for government or private sector. In results, it was found that most of them were somehow regularly
involved in touristic events however very few of them were found to know about social tourism concept. Although not
widely known, low profile people were also found to be as important as high profile in terms of the necessity of being
involved in social tourism which is an important result of our study.
In the light of these results, in order to make the social tourism applicable both private and government sectors should
collaborate. In addition these events should also be attractive to the low profile which should arouse the need of participation
because vocation is not a luxury but a mandatory need in order to reduce the stress and increase the motivation for work
therefore contribute to the national peace.
Keywords: social tourism, the development of domestic tourism, the development of social tourism
