THE EVALUATION OF CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL ASSETS IN TERMS OF
HERITAGE TOURISM AND SUSTAINABLE RURAL DEVELOPMENT: THE CASE OF
ARDANUÇ (ARTVĠN)
ABSTRACT
Ardanuç District is situated in the Eastern Black Sea Section of Black Sea Region of Turkey. It is administratively located
within the borders of Artvin Province. The district has quite a rich potential in terms of historical, archeological, socio-
cultural, and economic assets. However, the biggest problem is failure in adequate evaluation of this area in terms of rural
development and sustainable planning. In this regard, the present study aims to make a geographical evaluation of the tourism
potential of Ardanuç District with reference to its archeological sites, castles, religious spaces such as tombs, monasteries,
and churches, bridges, tablelands, and various festivals, all of which are about cultural tourism. Thus, an attempt is made to
answer the following questions: What are the historical, socio-cultural, and economic assets of the district? Is this area
suitable for cultural tourism and heritage tourism? What features of the area are important for cultural tourism and heritage
tourism? How are these tourism resources planned in a sustainable way? What feasible activities should be carried out in
order to introduce and raise awareness regarding historical, archeological, socio-cultural, and economic assets of the district?
The research data were obtained through literature review, various thematic maps, and systematically conducted field works.
The obtained data were evaluated through SWOT analysis. It will contribute significant to the region in terms of socio-
economic and local development and gaining the potential of Ardanuç in the aspect of heritage tourism to the tourism by
establishing the balance between recognition, presentation, protection and evaluation.
